Alden isn't short. Flying "economy plus" makes a world of difference. Also, the seats next to him were empty. A few Tylenol PM and Alden then slept for the vast majority of the 13 hour flight.
Highlights from the flight: Before his slumber, Alden starting reading "The men who stare at goats." Very silly. Then really, not much else, because he slept!!! (Those who know Alden know how rare it is for him to sleep on a plane - this is a really big deal)
The Dubai airport is ultra modern, fairly empty, smells of cheap cigarettes, and will be Alden's home for the next 7 hours or so before finding his way to his flight to Kabul. This flight is shorter, three hours or so, and there will be more napping since it is the middle of the night.
